About
The Department of Chemistry was established in 1975 as part of the Department of Chemical Engineering. In 1982, the Department of Chemistry was formally separated due to the implementation of the YÖK law. It continued as a distinct entity within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the university. However, following the Council of Ministers Decision No. 2010/175, published in the Official Gazette on March 11, 2010 (issue number 27518), the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Fırat University was dissolved. Subsequently, the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences were established. The integration of the departments within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences into the newly formed Faculty of Science was approved during the Higher Education Executive Board meeting on April 7, 2010, in accordance with Article 7/d-2 of Law No. 2547, amended by Law No. 2880.
Currently, the Faculty of Science comprises six departments: Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetic and Statistics. The Department of Chemistry includes the following divisions:
- Analytical Chemistry
- Organic Chemistry
- Physical Chemistry
- Inorganic Chemistry
- Biochemistry
The department offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs in Turkish language.
The Department of Chemistry aims to become a leading educational and research institution recognized nationally and internationally. It seeks to achieve excellence in science and technology, train successful individuals who represent their society and institution with confidence, and earn respect among global peers.
The mission of the Department of Chemistry is to train skilled researchers and professionals to meet the needs of chemistry-related industries. The department is committed to advancing chemical science and enhancing collaboration with other disciplines to address challenges faced by national and regional industries through research, projects, publications, and other scientific activities.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry
- Undergraduate
Students transferring from other formal education institutions at the undergraduate or postgraduate level may be exempt from overlapping courses, provided the content of previously completed courses aligns with the current program.
Graduates of the Chemistry Bachelor’s program are conferred the title of 'Chemist.' The department provides education beyond laboratory studies, enabling graduates to:
- Work as teachers in the Ministry of National Education and private institutions.
- Pursue academic careers by completing master’s and doctoral programs in Chemistry and related fields (e.g., Pharmacy, Medicine, Food Engineering).
